Basketball Shooting Drills
The clock is winding down and there is no time left to pass the ball. The game is on the line. As you focus on the basket everything else fades away. This is what you play for. Taking a short jump from the ground you push and release the ball.
What happens next depends on how hard you have trained. Practice is everything. Basketball shooting drills yesterday make baskets today.
Here are things to know when in comes to basketball shooting drills. First – every shooting drill needs to start with a warm up. Don’t worry about your lungs. Your shooting practices should focus on aim and release, so you don’t need to worry about your cardiovascular system.
Instead, worry about your hands. To get them warmed up dribble for a little while. Switch hands while dribbling. When you feel like they’re sufficiently warmed up you’re ready to start the drills.
Successful shooting drills will involve more than one basketball. One basketball is not enough. If you have to shoot and retrieve after every shot you will not develop the muscle memory you need. If you only have one ball you will need to borrow more from friends, or practice at a school that has a large number of basketballs. If you cannot obtain more than one basketball for your drills there is still one drill that you can do: the layup drill. Layup drills do not require more than one ball.
If you have a lot of basketballs then you are ready for your drills. Pick a spot on the court to shoot from. You should stand in one spot and shoot all your balls in a row. If at all possible you should practice with a friend who can retrieve the balls for you, so you don’t have to leave your spot. The goal is shoot one hundred straight baskets from one spot.
After you do this choose a different and begin shooting 100 baskets from there. You will build muscles and muscle memory by doing this. Your body will become much better at shooting from these locations during a game.
If you have a friend to help you drill, then you can practice the quick shot. Pick a spot on the court and stand there. Have your friend pass you the ball. Try to shoot the ball as soon as you catch it. This is a quick shot. Once again it will be beneficial to do as many of these in a row, from the same spot, as you can.
Distraction drills are very helpful drills. With these drills you will try shooting while a friend attempts to distract you. This will prepare you for the game. Your friend can either wave their arms in front of you, or try to make loud sounds from the side of you. The better you can focus on the basket, and not on your friend, the better you will shoot during the game.
